Product description

2019 a Grüner Veltliner year! Typical on the nose and in the mouth: green apple, pear and a slightly peppery spiciness. The pleasant citrus freshness is combined with creamy loess textures, resulting in a well-balanced Austrian white wine that you want to drink more of. The wine is aged sur lie for 3 months in stainless steel tanks.

The Mehofer vineyards are the northernmost tip of the Wagram region, which stretches from the Danube to the wine estate, which lies just northwest of Vienna. The geological features of the region in combination with consistent weather and climatic patterns form the basis for full-bodied wines, rich in aroma and flavor. Loess layers formed in the Ice Age cover the substrate of marine deposits and river gravel. This results in spicy wines with substance and drinking pleasure, even in a fairly low-alcohol classic style.

Mehofer has been making wine from organically grown grapes since 1992. The Mehofer family has integrated biological working into its lifestyle. During the renovation of the 200 year old cellars, moisture regulation and air flow treatment have been taken into account. The insulation was not realized artificially but with cellulose. Fungal diseases are a major problem in European vineyards. Because these diseases do not come from within, but from without, they must also be fought externally. Mildew occurs in different ways depending on the weather. Organic viticulture cannot function without protection either. The big difference between working biodynamically and not working biodynamically lies in the nature of the protection and the means used. Mehofer uses plant extracts (horsetail, fennel), baking powder, silicates, sulfur and copper to combat these diseases. Mehofer is currently experimenting with PIWI grape varieties, crossings between, for example, Grüner Veltliner and an American variety that is resistant to fungal diseases.
